Cottage or Coastal themed decorated mantel (1 mantel decorated 5 ways series)

August 23, 2013

Cottage or Coastal themed mantel

So I saved the best for last  Smile  Ok, not really but out of all the mantels this is probably my favorite and it is the one currently displayed in my home until I decorate my fall mantel in a few weeks.

For one reason because I am still hanging on to those last days of summer and dreaming of the beach, and two because I am moving to a more coastal/cottage theme in my house – light colors, beach accents, white furniture.  My husband even told me the the other day that he would like our bedroom to have a coastal feel to it like some furniture/rooms we saw recently– and I am happy to oblige his décor taste in this case. Smile

Many people decorated their house in a coastal theme year round especially if they live near the water so I can see this year round in homes.  Maybe add some pops of red for Christmas. Smile

Again, I just pulled things from around the house – blue vintage ball jars I have collected over time and display in different areas and shells and starfish that have been collected on different summer vacation trips.

I used my white bench on the hearth with a teal pillow and a candle and a starfish in a basket.

And some of you have seen this basket in the background in some of my frugal finds posts and asked about it.   I picked it up with a gift card at TJMaxx and I love it!  It is HUGE and I have used it for baby shower gifts at church and then I use it at home to throw extra pillows and blankets in to keep them nicely contained.  It came painted like that, but I am sure that you could paint any basket you wanted in the same manner by taping off the bottom and painting it white.

I love that this mantel is very white and light looking but also has the pops of color of the light blues/teals and yellow.

I hope have enjoyed this series as much as I have!  I know this isn’t always the normal topic around here but several people had requested some decorating tips and advice on decorating mantels and specifically decorating a non-seasonal mantel/space.

I hope it has helped you get some ideas on how to decorate your mantel, maybe helped you determine what style of decorating you like, and given you some inspiration.  I know I show a mantel decorated but you can use these same tips and styles to decorate shelves, top of entertainment centers, top of a piano, picture ledges, any flat space like that.

If you missed any of the 5 mantels this week here they are again:

I have been working on several projects this week – spray painting, painting, and crafting so look for those in the next 2 weeks!  Plus fall crafts, recipes, and decorating is right around the corner – yay!  Have a great weekend (and pick up something at a yard sale you can use to decorate you house Smile)

You have such a knack at styling mantels – I love them all but, I am drawn to the beachy one the most. This is probably because I live by the beach and my decor is beachy also… But, I have always liked your mantels even before this post… Have a great weekend….

    Christina,
You DID save the best for last!! I loved the colors, things you used to decorate and the large shutters!! I’ve enjoyed each of them, but this one is by far my favorite! Thank you for your ideas and inspiration…..I love your creativity and that you use so many thrifted finds to decorate. I am so looking forward to your fall ideas…… I would love to see you do another mantel series and decorate it in different ways for one of the seasons. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks again for the great ideas this week!
    Blessings,
    Lanita

Great mini-series! I really enjoyed watching/reading your creativity. I really liked the black & white family photos mantel, but they are all beautiful.
Looking forward to what you’ll do in the fall!

I love this nautical look. We live overlooking a lake, but not accessible, and I have been trying to give it a “lakehouse” feel. We have a very large fireplace with a mantle, brick etc. This gives me ideas, and I love the wall color. Do you know the brand and number for the wall color, or did I miss it?

If you have a favorite that we haven’t listed here, share
it in the comments. In this case is one of the most elaborated, complicated

I just ADORE these!! Thank you so much for sharing these! I just moved into our first home and I love the coastal them, not touristy beachy, but COASTAL (which my hubby likes too!) so I’m thrilled to see your inexpensive ways to decorate! We don’t have a fireplace but we are going to create a accent wall that has a similar shelf that looks like a mantle so I love this!! Thanks again!!!
