As many of you head to the beach in the next few weeks for vacation, make sure to bring home some décor for your house! In the form of shells, star fish, sand dollars, sand and more! It can serve double purpose as memories/souvenirs from your trip AND frugal décor for your home!
I have had these made for quite a while, but just now getting around to sharing them.
Here’s how to make your own beach inspired wall art. You will need a frame or 3 frames that are the same size/shape. I did this project a while back and grabbed these shadow box frames from Ikea. I can’t find them on their site now, but maybe they still carry them in store? Thrift store or yard sale frames would work as well. Even frames without glass would work great as it would be even more dimensional than mine.
I took the frame apart. Then I took some scraps of burlap and cut them a little bigger than the back wood of the frame. Because my burlap was light colored you could see the brown of the board through the burlap. Simple fix – cut a piece of white paper to size and layer that underneath the burlap.
I hot glued the burlap to the back of the back part of the frame making sure to get it tight and smooth in the front.
Then I glued my sea shell, star fish, and sand dollar to the burlap!
Put my frame back together (this is what the back looks like) and I was done!
Super easy, cheap, pretty, and a great way to add some personal touches or memories from a trip to your home. You could even label them with the date of your vacation or location where you found them.
And if you can’t find the shells or star fish on the beach, all the little souvenir shops in beach towns sell these for CHEAP!
I almost wish mine weren’t behind glass! I think an 8×10 frame filled with 2 rows of 3-4 shells or beachy objects would be great as well! Might have to keep that in mind to find on our beach vacation this summer.
And for where they are displayed in my house? Well, they are hanging on this little space of wall outside our guest bathroom. Which you are getting a sneak peak of today! Full reveal coming in the next couple weeks! I actually have 2 bathrooms to reveal to you so we might just have a bathroom themed week.
This bathroom is beach/nautical themed so this art is PERFECT to add a little touch to the hallway outside the bathroom.
Do you collect souvenirs from vacations or trips? How do you display them in your home?

So fresh and summery! Love the look. Yes, I always come home with sand and shells when I go to the beach. I love to display them in big glass jars. It takes me back to the beach each time I walk past.
Trying not to pout that I missed your latest giveaway! 🙂

Have you done a test run of what the framed objects look like with the glass removed from the frame? I have some dimensional frames — not as deep as yours — but I removed the glass for a trial run and it works fine, you just need to add some layers of cardboard at the back to make up for the thickness of the glass when pushing those prongs back down to hold the “picture” and backing in place.

No, I haven’t. Have no idea why I didn’t even think about that – will have to see what I like better…

I know this was awhile ago but do you happen to remember what size the frames were that you used? I’m doing something similar for my bathroom and am having trouble finding the right frame.
