Sharing an easy way to add patriotic touches to a front door basket filled with greenery.
I am busy adding some patriotic and summer touches to my home starting with the front door! I hadn’t changed anything on our front porch since I got it cleaned up and decorated for spring but was wanting to do something different on the front door for the rest of the summer. I always do a wreath but was wanting to try something different and do a front door basket instead! Have you ever used a basket instead of a wreath on your front door? I have to admit it was way easier than making a wreath!
I’ll show you exactly what I filled it with but basically I just filled it with several green fern picks and some hanging succulent type picks, added a sign on the front, stuck in some little flags and called it done! Seriously like a 10-minute project!
So here’s a picture of everything I used and I’ll link as much as I can below:
- twine
- Happy Place cast iron sign – local shop (The Painted Nest) but she ships and has beautiful decor and great prices!
- basket- thrifted
- large fern pick – Michaels out of stock but similar one linked here
- 3 small fern picks – Michael’s last year
- hanging greenery picks – Hobby Lobby
- small flags – can find anywhere but linked these here. I use them all over my house for summer.
I will link several similar baskets I found if you are wanting one for your front door or even to use inside. I think a front door basket is so versatile and could be used all year long just changing out the florals inside of it. I love this willow gray washed version linked here. And this darker wicker one has a sign on the front already. And love the color/texture of this one too!
To attach the sign to the basket I just strung some jute twine in the holes on the side and in through the basket and tied a knot in the back. It is heavy cast iron and such good quality and you won’t believe the price! My friend Amanda has the best little store in the cutest little town and also ships and does live sales on facebook (here’s a link to her facebook group). I have loved adding some new home decor pieces to my home from her shop recently.
I love what it added to the basket and it’s such a fun saying for the front door or for inside your house.
The fern picks I literally just stuck inside bending the stems as needed – larger one in the back, 3 smaller ones in the front, and the draping ones on either side. If your basket is bigger or you need more support or height for your greenery, you could use floral foam inside the basket to stick the stems into or even use crumpled up paper or grocery bags to help fill the space.
The flags are just stuck in there as well and will be easy to remove if I don’t want to use them for the rest of the summer. The ferns/greenery-filled basket will be perfect for the rest of summer though! So many options – could add stems of white flowers, hydrangeas, tulips for spring – you may see this basket filled with several things if I leave it up for other seasons.
I also added some bit larger stick flags in my barrel planters. I wasn’t sure I was going to decorate for the 4th of July but with firework shows canceled and the tough times we have had in recent months, I am feeling to remember the blessing it is even amidst the trials to live in the country we do.
You can see my entire front porch in my spring front porch tour – the only thing that has changed is the front door decor and flags in the flower pots.
Love that even my flowers are patriotic – blue hydrangeas and red roses – need to add something white and flowering out here
Do you decorate for 4th of July? I’d love to see your summer decor!
