I am still in the midst of a one month, less than $100 challenge makeover on our laundry room – you can see the before and my plans for the room here, and the new paint before/after here. This week I have a quick update on an accessory for the room since we are still working on the cabinet situation in the room. The cabinets are gonna be amazing (I hope!), but they sure have been a challenge!
I am a huge thrifter/yard sale shopper. So when I am shopping I am always trying to think ahead of rooms I plan on working on and things I might need. I found this light oak looking wicker basket at a yard sale in the fall for $2 I think and I knew it would be perfect for a new laundry room basket when I finally gave the room a makeover.
The basket was in great shape but I wasn’t a huge fan of the golden oak color. Don’t pass up things at yard sales or thrift stores or maybe even store bought just because of their color – because many times it can be changed so easily with paint or stain!
I gave the basket a quick and easy makeover with some Dark Walnut stain from Varathane. Just wipe it on with a rag (I love to use old clean rags or my husband’s old white tshirts for staining rags), and let dry! I added a chalkboard tag that I had in my stash just to dress it up a bit and look how much better it looks!
I much prefer darker natural looking wood baskets like this vs. the light wicker ones. I could have also painted it with chalk paint to give it a totally different look or even spray painted it. So many options!
Have you ever thought about giving a basket a makeover with stain or paint?
See how everyone else is coming along in the $100 room challenge below – there are some amazing room transformations happening this month!

Great idea! I don’t think it ever occurred to me to stain a basket! I have a large wicker basket that I use as a laundry hamper in my bathroom, and I gave it a few coats of clear poly to help protect it from dampness ( like wet towels). I think I would for sure do that if I stained a basket, esp. for laundry, just to protect it, make it easier to wipe clean if needed, and to ensure stain didn’t transfer onto clothes. Looking forward to seeing the final makeover!
