Ball jars! They have sort of taken the world by storm. What your grandmother knew only as a container to can veggies, jams, and fruits from her garden… our generation knows them as the classic American-made icon perfect for decorating and crafting! From weddings, to home décor, to tableware, to outdoor lighting, mason jars or ball jars are everywhere!
So let’s talk about 10+ ways to use Ball Jars (other than actually canning or storing food in them!)
Use them as glasses for showers, parties, a wedding, or everyday!
And if you are going to use them as glasses as a party – why not fill them with the napkin, utensils, even a name card for a fun place setting?
You can decorate with them on a mantel
Pop in some baby breath and use it as a centerpiece
If you don’t have colored mason jars you can paint them to make them colored in whatever color and design you desire.
Serve a layered salad
Or a savory dessert. I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to food served in jars.
You can turn them into a soap dispenser (you can buy this one from this etsy shop or follow my DIY tutorial to make your own)
Fill them up with goodies for a super cute gift container
Or even make a DIY snowglobe
Honestly, there are SOOO many uses for them and creative ways to use them as décor, storage, serving ware and more – just browse Pinterest for Mason jars or Ball jars and you will find so many more.
It’s been a happy mail week around my home this week! Power tools and Ball jars showed up together on my porch one day – now that will make a vintage décor and power tool loving girl’s heart go pitter patter!
Jarden Home Brands, the maker of the Ball brand home canning products, sent me a box of Ball jars and goodies to enjoy (and some for one of you to enjoy too!)
I have been seeing these green vintage colored jars everywhere – craft stores, Target, Walmart, hardware stores and more and have been waiting for the perfect excuse to pick some up. These just scream spring to me – can’t wait to use them to decorate for spring or even Christmas! And I will probably be using them at an upcoming shower as well.
It’s the 100th anniversary of the Perfection line of jars and they are stamped on the back to commemorate that.
And I happen to think they are just a little bit of perfection myself!
Jarden Home Brands is hosting its first annual International Can-It-Forward Day tomorrow, Saturday, August 16th, with special guest renowned chef and Bravo’s Top Chef judge, Hugh Acheson!
They will celebrate home canning via a live webcast on www.freshpreserving.com and will also be exploring alternative uses for Ball brand jars. The event is taking place at the Brooklyn Borough Hall Farmers Market and, in addition to canning demos where viewer questions will be answered in real-time by Chef Acheson and other experts, there will also be segments on crafting, herb gardening and the brand’s new drink ware line! They will also be attempting a Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Mason Jar Mosaic. Sounds like a lot of fun!

I was born and raised in Muncie, Indiana, where the Ball Brothers started their company. I have a terrific collection of their jars dating back 100 years. I have one that was a prototype for a milk bottle that was given to me as a gift by Edwin Ball himself. I just LOVE all of the awesome ideas for using the jars. I do use them for flowers but they are the very light blue from decades ago. Going to try buying some clear ones and painting them. Love your blog!!!
