Your guide to turning your house into a home... one DIY project and yard sale find at a time

Friday Frugal Finds: Goodwill shopping even on vacation

July 18, 2014

One day I will get back into a regular blogging schedule again, you guys!  I miss the blog and my readers when I am not blogging but can’t seem to do projects, live life, and blog all at the same time anymore after my life getting so rearranged in the last 6 months.  Hoping in the next 2 weeks to be back to posting on a more regular schedule because I am brainstorming a really fun series for the month of August that I can’t wait to share with you and do in my house!

So we were on vacation a few weeks ago and yes, I Goodwill shop even on vacation!  It is fun to go into a different store and see what treasures you can find.  Especially if you are vacationing in a nice area you can sometimes find a really nice Goodwill or thrift store where you can really rack up good.   My friend Molly (she blogs at Pennies ‘n Grace) and her family just moved to the Charleston area and we drove from where we were vacationing and walked into their church Sunday morning as a complete surprise to them!! Smile  We posted this on facebook a few minutes before we walked in! Smile  The look on their face was priceless!

That afternoon we decided to visit some of the Goodwill stores she has just found in her area.  She has a regular Goodwill store and a Goodwill outlet (where you pay by the pound for clothes, etc) in the same parking lot!!  How lucky is that!  So we hit 3 Goodwill stores in 2 hours and came home with some really good bargains and had a TON of fun and laughs together!  So thankful for good friends that have been such an encouragement and blessing to me and my husband.

So here’s what I found!

A grapevine garland for $1.51.  Can’t wait to use this on my fall mantel.

They had just rolled this cart out from the back and I almost overlooked these blue vintage mason jars.  Priced at $1.41 each they were a STEAL!

I paid $4.99 for this brown leather purse that is in pristine condition.  It is Tignanello brand which apparently is somewhat of a high end brand.  They sell for $100-200 at Macy’s and online.  I haven’t decided if I am going to keep it or sell it on eBay.  Need to learn how to sell things on eBay!

Molly and I each snatched up one of these sweater covered lampshades!   At $2.42 they were a good price and look like they were some brand new Target stock.  She has great stores in her area that get brand new Target clearance stuff all the time – sure wish ours did!

At the Goodwill clearance store I found these XO plates from Pottery Barn – will be so fun to use on a mantel or to decorate for Valentine’s Day.  I paid by the pound for them so not sure exactly how much they were – probably $2-3 since they are sort of heavy.

And I also found this white lantern  for $1.51.  It looks like it might have come from IKEA.  I had been wanting a white lantern for my front porch so I was glad to find this!

So there’s my finds from our fun day with friends on vacation.  I haven’t had a chance to yard sale in about 4 weeks due to being busy and out of town on Saturdays so hoping to find some as I am out and about today doing errands.  And I might get a chance to pop in my Value Village store to see what they have today.

What have you found recently?  Been doing lots of yard sale shopping this summer?

So, have I missed it or have you shared how your life has been rearranged in the last 6 months? This is just my 2 cents, but I read a lot of blogs, and though I do enjoy your creative ideas, what I think is missing from your blog is a certain amount of authenticity. My favorite blogs are those in which the author shares not only day to day stuff, but really lets the reader get a glimpse into the ups and downs of her life. I certainly don’t expect a complete diary, but even though I’ve been reading your blog for a long time, I don’t feel like I know you as a person, for instance, I’ve never prayed for you because I don’t know that you have any needs. Compare that to Flower Patch Farmgirl or The Lettered Cottage or any number of other blogs that give us a window into their life, and I often feel led to pray for them. I also can’t wait to read their blogs, not so much for what they’re doing, but for finding out how they’re doing.
Again, I could have just missed it, because to be honest, I’m just not that excited to read your blog. This is really meant to be constructive criticism, so I hope you can take it that way. It’s not my intention to make you feel bad, and like I said, I do appreciate your ideas on decorating your home and realize that that is the main purpose of your blog.
