Our new home has introduced another new thing to us – an automatic garage door opener! We didn’t have a garage door opener at our last home when we bought it and never bothered installing one because we used our garage mostly as a workshop instead of parking in it. Well our new home came with a working garage door opener! Which has been so convenient and fun to use. Our front door is around the corner of the house from our driveway so we always come and go through the garage. We have loved the extra convenience.
But we didn’t have enough openers for our vehicles and I take frequent walks with the baby which meant taking keys for the car, then unlocking the car to open the garage so I can park the stroller in the garage before going inside the house. I know… a very little inconvenience. And there was the time my husband left for work and left the garage open and I found it standing open hours later when I went to leave the house.
So when I heard about the Chamberlain MyQ Smartphone Garage Door Controller I was very intrigued. I LOVE technology. Seriously I can be a little bit of technology geek – control things with my smartphone?? I am all over that!
The MyQ Garage is an accessory that easily connects to any brand garage door opener. It works by connecting to your home’s wi-fi network while communicating through an app downloadable to your smartphone or tablet. The MyQ app also integrates through other smart home products such as the Nest Cam, Nest Thermostat, Wink App, or Xfinity Home.
You can buy the Chamberlain MyQ Garage Controller at Home Depot in-store or online. I picked mine up at my local store on what seems to be my once week trip there since we moved.
The installation was seriously simple and took me and my husband all of like 25 minutes (I could have done it all myself but I was holding the baby and needed to take pictures to share with you. 🙂 I will briefly describe what we did but refer to the instruction manual online or in the box for full instructions.
1. Install the door sensor to the inside upper part of your garage door with provided fastening strips.
2. Install the bracket for the wifi hub on the ceiling near the garage door opener.
3. Connect Wi-Fi hub to the bracket and plug into the outlet.
3. Connect to the internet – follow instructions for either Apple, Android, or other devices in the instruction manual. The Chamberlain MyQ will use Bluetooth to connect to your phone. Then follow the instructions to add the WiFi hub to your network.
4. Download the free Chamberlain MyQ Home Control App.
5. Launch the app to set up an account and follow the onscreen instructions.
And that’s it! Now you can control your garage door from your smartphone or even your computer at home or at work by logging into your account. You can also see the status of your garage door at any time in the app or by logging in online.
So now when I go for a walk with the baby, I just take my phone (which I have anyways to take pictures or in case of emergency). When we get back home, I can open the garage door right from my phone and park the stroller before we go inside.
Another function that I love is you can set up alerts to come to your email or as a notification on your phone. You can be alerted when the garage door is opened, closed, or if it has remained open for an extended period of time. So no more of the garage getting accidently left open – if it was, I would receive an alert and even if I was miles away, I could instantly close it.
Another way I can see us using it for is to let someone in even if we weren’t home – a family member or friend need to borrow a tool from the garage? Or your kids get home from school and forget their key? Just open the garage from your app while still at work!
So tell me am I the last one to have a garage door opener? Seriously can’t believe we lived that long without one. And now we can control it even easier!

Wow, this is incredible. As technology continues to grow, so does the things we can achieve with it. I recently saw another article talking about amazon key giving access to your home door even when you are not home. This is nice thing to have.
