Your guide to turning your house into a home... one DIY project and yard sale find at a time

Make your bedroom a sanctuary (31 days to Love the Home You Have)

31 days to Love the Home You Have

This post is part of a 31 day series – 31 days to Love the Home You Have.  I am blogging through the 31 day challenge in the back of the book “Love the Home You Have” by Melissa Michaels of The Inspired Room.  You can read all the posts in the series so far here.  And to make sure you don’t miss a post you can sign up to have every post delivered to your inbox , or follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram to get even more home decorating ideas and inspiration to help you fall in love with your home.

Oh this is a post I have definitely not mastered yet.  I have worked hard this past year to makeover my bedroom but it isn’t quite finished yet.  But even with the few projects not done (a DIY headboard, making some kind of sitting area, and decorating), I still wrestle with making and keeping a bedroom a sanctuary.

It has come a long way from this though (my husband’s not very pretty furniture) and the before….

 master bedroom before

To this!    I bought a set of furniture from $40 at a yard sale and refinished it – tall dresser before/after and veneer repair here, long dresser before/after post here, $20 dresser now used as nightstand, and another small dresser used as nightstand.  I also painted some DIY stenciled curtains, we bought new mattresses and a bedframe from IKEA, and I bought some new bedding from the Better Homes and Gardens collection at Walmart and added a bunch of thrifted pillows.    So you can definitely create a beautiful bedroom on a budget.

And I transformed this weird nook…

Into a built in bookcase!

But too often the piles of laundry end up on the bed, the bed isn’t made, and “stuff” just piles up all around the room and on the flat surfaces.

I got the dressers cleaned off, dusted and rearranged this past week in an earlier challenge so my goal this week is to get the rest of the room cleaned up (along with cleaning out and switching out seasonal clothes from drawers and the closet).

And hopefully I can even get a little sitting area set up with a yard sale chair I need to bring in there – still looking for a cushion and a lamp.

So join me – let’s work on making our bedroom a sanctuary this week – may be something you can do this weekend.

Challenge: Work on making your bedroom a sanctuary.  Clean off flat surfaces, if you don’t already… work on making the bed every day a habit, freshen up things – maybe get rid of some things or rearrange some things.

I have to tell you that your room has indeed come a long way. I followed it for the past year and you’ve done a super job on such frugal funds. I love it! Remember how embarrassed you were to show it to the world that first day? I don’t sense that anymore. Which means you are very pleased with it. That’s all that matters 🙂

I had a sitting area in my previous bedroom as well. I loved it. It made it seem so cozy.
Now that I’ve (happily) moved to a small victorian condo, my sitting area is all over the place. LOL

Regarding the cushion. I don’t know what kind of chair it is… a ‘comfy’ chair? If so, if you see a old comfy chair sitting on the curb for disposal – take the cushion and rehab it (cut it, shape it, recover it). It’s going to be disposed of anyway. Maybe a broken chair at the good will? One which will be disposed of. Ask to take the cushion.

Every bit of your new room is beautiful. And more beautiful because you did it so frugally. Let us all learn here…. Frugal doesn’t mean cheap or ugly. It means smart and accurate. (that’s why we’re here. We’re smart! LOL)

I have always made my bedroom my oasis. No TV though- that’s a no-no. It’s minimal and comfy.
If I remember correctly, your W+D is off your bedroom?? Perhaps bringing the clean laundry out to the living area instead of on the bed.
