Need a last minute centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table? And want to make it to be something you can use all year long? Then I have just the thing with this EASY, painted + distressed centerpiece with chalkboard labels so you can customize it and label it for any holiday or event.
And for all of you that don’t love the Home Improvement stores as much as you love the mall, this is a NO tools required project. I had originally actually planned on building a box BUT when I found this one at Joann’s Fabric it was exactly what I wanted and cheaper than I could have bought the materials to make it. ($7.99 – 50% coupon = made it less than $4.00!)
The rest of my supplies was some Behr Premium Plus Ultra Paint + Primer in One paint – just in pure white off the shelf (what I use for the trim in my house), the wood box from Joann’s, and 2 rectangle wood plaques that were $1 each at Walmart.
I painted the box with 2 light coats with the Behr white paint. Since it was paint and primer in one, it went on the bare wood just perfect. The wood plaques got a coat of chalkboard spray paint. Then I sanded/distressed the edges of the box with sandpaper and brushed on some dark walnut stain (optional if you don’t like the distressed/antiqued look).
I love how some simple sandpaper and stain can make this box look aged and like I bought it at an antique store!
I just hot glued the wood plaques on the box with 2 dots of hot glue and it was ready to fill and decorate!
A message on the chalkboards, a dollar store leaf garland, some candles from my stash, plus some mini gourds and pumpkins completed the look.
I love using planter style boxes as centerpieces. They are short so they don’t block your view of the people around the table and so customizable and easy to change up with any décor, season, or event. The addition of the chalkboard labels on these really up the look.
Fall plates and square plates all from the Better Homes and Gardens line at Walmart – more details in this post.
Thanks to Behr for challenging me to come up with a November centerpiece idea. I am going to enjoy using this all throughout the year!

This is exactly the sort of thing I was looking to build this weekend, but a lot easier and requires no tools 🙂 Gotta see if Hobby Lobby has these little crates. Thanks for the tips and inspiration!

Did you stand up your candles on something to get them to be higher in the Box?
