The Frugal Homemaker

Your guide to turning your house into a home... one DIY project and yard sale find at a time

Cozy and Neutral Farmhouse Fall Mantel and Home Tour

September 28, 2018

Happy Fall!  I am so excited to be joining in this Farmhouse Fall Home Tour with 20+ other bloggers and show you around our house a bit this fall season.

If you are joining me from A Blue Nest welcome!  A bit of background on me and our blog, we moved into a new to us home that needed a bit of work a little over 2 years ago and then had our first little one just a few weeks later.  Life is busy but we love it!  I am an avid yard sale shopper and love to decorate my home with my finds so you’ll see many of them throughout this tour.

So let’s pretend that I am not drenched in sweat while outside taking these pictures, but instead snuggled up drinking coffee on this swing, ok?  I can’t wait for those days!

Fall in the south seems like it takes a long time to come – BUT temperatures are finally in the mid 80’s instead of mid 90’s this week so we are finally headed in the right direction! Winking smile

My seasonal decor always starts on my front porch and fall is no exception.  Mums, pumpkins, and picket fences… pretty much what fall is made of!

A few months ago I happened to come across a post on my local facebook marketplace advertising piles of picket fence for free – so I didn’t waste any time hopping in my husbands truck and coming back with a truckload of it! Smile  I couldn’t wait to use some of them to decorate for fall and have several other projects in mind for them too.

My DIY cotton wreath (made for less than $20!) graces our front door this fall dressed up with a simple sign and a buffalo plaid ribbon.

An old chair with no seat found at a yard sale for $2 was the perfect spot for a big basket of mums and I chose various shades of neutral mums this year.

I recently came across the home decor yard sale of a lifetime and literally spent every dollar in my wallet scooping up some amazing finds.  This Welcome sign was one of them – something I had been wanting to add to my front porch.  And I know I’ll get questions on the wagon wheel planter…. you guessed it, yard sale find.  This time from many years ago – in fact before the farmhouse “trend” was really even beginning.  He usually just hangs out next to a bench under some trees in my front yard but I stole him for my front porch for fall and dressed him up with some mums.

I always, always wanted a rocking chair front porch so this is a bit of a dream of mine in our current home.

And a front porch filled with piles of yard sale finds (all the rocking chairs were yard sale finds too Smile) is even better.  Is Frugal Farmhouse or Fleamarket Farmhouse a style? Because that’s basically my style. Smile

Now let’s take a step inside where some picket fence even made it onto the mantel… I found pieces to an old gate in my pile and knew they had to find a home over my fireplace for fall.

Because fall temperatures, falling leaves, and fall colors take quite a while to appear in the south, I find myself gravitating to keep things quite neutral.  It’s just hard to bring in all the oranges and fall colors when it’s still 95 degrees.  And my farmhouse loving heart just loves all the neutral tones too.

Magnolia wreaths, greenery wreaths, white pumpkins and buffalo plaid – a few of my favorites!

My frugal shopping doesn’t stop just at yard sales though, I love clearance and thrifty finds too.  Target dollar spot had some amazing fall decor this year – the black and white throw (actually a blanket scarf), plaid pumpkin pillow, banner on the mantel, and some of the little pumpkins piled in a wheelbarrow all came from there.

Candles are a must for fall and winter when the days get dark so early and the days seem extra dreary.  The fall scents from Antique Candleworks are some of my favorite!

I was working on decorating during one of my little girl’s naps and when she came out to the living room and saw her little chair she said, “Mommy, you did put a pillow in MY chair?  I love that pillow in my chair!”  So apparently the pillow love has already bit her even at age 2- I’m a proud mama! Winking smile

And fall wouldn’t be complete without coffee, and pumpkin spice!  I just added this little coffee station this summer and it gets a lot of use Smile

Love the picket fence! I have a picket fence addiction myself and just asked my neighbor for his very old, mostly rotten picket fence that he was throwing in the trash. I took it apart and sorted the pickets into 3 piles– perfect, ok and too far gone to use. I made a small picket fence backdrop, a smaller and shorter backdrop and a fall sign using the pickets as arrows for my front yard– 3 great projects for free! And free is my favorite kind of project!
