$100 room challenge Hallway makeover–before + plans

I am so excited to tackle another $100 room makeover challenge!  Erin over at Lemons, Lavender and Laundry started this challenge several years ago and it has been amazing to see what people can accomplish for $100 in a room makeover.

For this $100 room makeover challenge I am going to be focusing on this back hallway in our house that connects 2 bedrooms and the guest/main bathroom.

You see this hallway and this view from our kitchen and living room and I have always wanted to dress it up.

Here’s the view of the hallway to the right – I hung a small gallery wall and then never finished it years ago.

And here’s the view to the left.  Real life over here – didn’t even clean up the toys for this before picture.

I did paint this hallway when we moved in and we have also replaced the standard builder grade light with a nicer old schoolhouse style light.

But other than that I haven’t done much at all and it is very plain!

So here’s my goals to spruce up this hallway during the month of January.

#1. Install Board and Batten

I love this look by Mint Candy Design

I may do mine just a bit higher up but not sure.  I am pretty sure I am going to paint the board and batten white BUT it would also be fun to do it a medium gray too?  I also will be repainting the top of the walls.  If I do the board and batten white – then probably a very light gray/greige.  If I do the board and batten dark then I would do above white.

2. Possibly do a sponge wall design above the board and batten (like this one from @randrathome on Instagram)

This is going to have to trial and error – I am just going to have to try at least one wall to see what I think.  I really think it would be fun and I would do lightly contrasting colors (like 1-2 colors darker than the wall color on the paint strip).  I have always wanted to try this design and this seems like a great space to do it.

3. Add family photos in frames.

We have no family pictures hung in our house and I want to fix that!  We got family pictures taken in December and I am anxious to have some of those and possibly some baby/growing up pictures of our little girl actually hung on the wall!

I am thinking 3-4 large frames on that wall you can see from the living room just hung in one row (where the green wreath is.)  And maybe 3-4 more on  the opposite wall where the white floral wreath is.  BUT I also may opt to do a grid of 6 or 8 frames on the wall you can see from the living room.

Also depending on how much budget I have left (I think I have leftover wood and paint from another project that I can use for most of this) I may have to do DIY frames that I build versus buying them because they are not cheap!

I am excited to tackle this project and take you along with me!  I’ll be sharing a full tutorial on how to do a DIY board and batten wall/room along with taking you along if the sponge wall works too.  Make sure to follow me on Instagram because I share lots of behind the scenes in stories.

  1. First of all, I am SO EXCITED to have you joining the challenge. Your room makeovers are some of my very favorites. Your ideas for this space are perfect… and don’t worry, we had family photos taken 3 years ago, and I still haven’t done anything with them, and now it’s time to get new ones I would think. Can’t wait to follow along with this transformation!

  2. What a fun little project! The board and batten will really make a statement. Looking forward to seeing your accent paint treatment- could very cool.
