What do you feel like when you go on vacation? You dream and plan and save for many months beforehand and then live it up while you are there. Staying in a with a beautiful room/home/cabin and with beautiful surroundings of the beach/mountains/city – wherever and however you do vacations. There is no chores or house to clean or maybe even laundry to do or meals to prep– and crisp white sheets on the bed and fluffy white towels in the bathroom. No wonder when we come home to dirty laundry, a hungry family that needs fed 3 times a day, an empty fridge, and a house that still needs work we feel the “vacation blues”. Why do we dream and plan more about the once a year vacation more than we dream and plan about living intentionally in the home that we live in the other 51 weeks of the year?
So let’s talk about some ways we can change that. “How can we turn our dreams back toward our homes? What will help make our homes as special as a vacation escape?” – Love the Home you Have, p. 64.
That is one of the reasons why I wanted to add white bedding in my home – I LOVE the white bedding in most places I have stayed – it looks elegant, and clean, and I want that feeling in my home. I now have white bedding in my master bedroom and in my guest room.
And again with white towels, I love the white towels at hotels. So why not have white towels at my home? I added white towels when I redid my bathroom and have been using them for almost a year and I still love them!
They have held up great, they wash and bleach super clean. It was one of the best decisions I made and our bathroom feels so much more luxurious now.
Think about some things that make vacation special. No, we still have to do laundry, cook, and clean at home – but what about other things that make vacation special? You probably spend some special times together as a family around a dinner table – either at a restaurant or at the place you are staying. So why not make dinner time special at home? We have to eat dinner every night – so why not make it special! Maybe pick one night a week to do a fun dinner – maybe eat by candlelight, or have the kids write out the menu, or use fancy dishes, or do a DIY homemade pizza night, or have pancakes in pj’s by candlelight like I mentioned in a past post.Play music during dinner, get dressed up for dinner, drink hot chocolate on the front porch in the cool fall evenings, grill hot dogs and s’mores over a bonfire (or over the fire in the fireplace!), or decorate cookies after dinner?
Find some ways to make your home and meals special for your family – yes, it might require just a bit of extra effort but it will be so worth it!
Challenge for today: Pick a night this week (maybe this weekend) to make dinner special. Do something unusual to make it fun and exciting! I would love to know what you know what you do!

I have a variety of dishes that I like to mix and match and change things up from time to time. I also like to do theme dinners – like a baseball, basketball or football dinner (we are all sports fans!) when our favorite teams are playing, a Mexican Food dinner, or a Back to School dinner, to name a few. My family always seem to enjoy them and likes when we do something new and/or fun!
Thanks for sharing the great ideas…..
