It hasn’t felt much like winter this week in GA with 60 degree afternoons, but I am sure we still have some winter days to come here in the south and my mantel is sure decked out for winter! I am excited to be sharing a winter themed decorating project with you as part of A Celebration of Winter Blog Tour with a group of bloggers. Make sure to check out their winter themed projects and posts at the end of this post.
When I was thinking about what I would do on my mantel after I took the Christmas décor down, I decided I wanted to do something fun and whimsical for a change! Hence was born my “Do You Want to Build a Snowman Winter Mantel!”
I had no idea how I was going to DIY a snowmen flat enough to go on my mantel but I knew I wanted play off the popular Frozen theme of “Do you want to build a snowman” for winter. It was fun to think outside the box and get a bit creative without spending anything more than a few dollars on some clearance finds that I will use again.
I grabbed a dollar store green wreath from my stash, a tin platter from my thrift store donation box, and a frisbee from the garage.
I had been watching after-Christmas sales and found these styfoam ball ornaments for $0.10 each at Walmart and the Snow Cover for $0.30 at Dollar General. You could also use batting if you had that on hand.
I used hot glue to lightly secure the snow cover to back of my 3 objects. Hot glue will usually peel right off so this is not permanent at all.
To “stack them” on top of each other, I actually hung all 3 of them on the wall. Using my paper clip hangar method (hot gluing it to the back of the object) and some small thumbtacks in the wall.
Then it was just swiping a red scarf from my scarf collection and black hat from my husband’s hats and my snowman was born – I just love him!
I made the red popsicle stick snowflake last year – tutorial here. And the other fabric snowflakes came from Dollar Tree and were in my winter stash. I wrote my message on my thrift store frame turned chalkboard (don’t judge my not-very-professional chalkboard writing – I definitely want to work on that!) and hung a $0.25 garland (wrapping embellishment found on clearance at Walmart) over it.
So fun! I just love the little pops of red leading up to Valentine’s Day too. I may do a Valentine’s mantel and I may not – either way this one can totally work for Valentine’s too and through February.
The hearth is decorated with more secondhand and clearance finds.
A $0.25 yard sale red sweater pillow cover, thrifted throw I just found recently, and a yard sale bench.
And some DIY snowballs made by covering those white styrofoam balls with ModPodge and then rolling in faux snow.
I couldn’t leave my $5 flea market sled out of this mantel – it fits perfectly!
I always hate how dark the house feels after removing all the Christmas lights so using some white lights on my mantel covered in faux snow helps to keep just a bit of twinkle in the house on dreary and cold winter days.
I had so much fun putting this together and we have enjoyed it in our home! So next time you decorate seasonal mantel don’t be afraid to think outside the box and just have FUN with it!
And if you live in a region where you have snow… maybe go build a snowman with your kids and make some fun memories!

I just love snowmen and especially how you put yours together with things you found around your house. It’s genius! And that hat just takes it over the top. I love everything about your winter mantle. And, yes, it does inspire me to build a snowman.
We’ve been having warm weather here in SC, too. 🙂

Hi Christina,
What a cute, whimsical mantel….love your creativity! I also love how you incorporate things from your home, as well as things you find on clearance and at thrift stores, yard sales, etc. I saw that same garland at Wal-Mart on their after-Christmas clearance, but wasn’t sure how I could use it!? Thanks for sharing….you always have such great ideas!
Blessings,
Lanita

Looks great. You could easily incorporate Valentines Day. Some heart ornaments on your cute white tree. Heart cookie cutters would be cute too!
Have a super evening!

I am so glad to see a little red decoration in your after Christmas mantel! Every post I have read so far was all about whites and greens and ditching the reds! Red makes a home feel so much cozier.!
