NO-sew Burlap Rosette Tutorial (DIY Fabric Flower tutorial)

April 10, 2013

I am back this week to share another DIY flower tutorial as part of the min April Flowers series  I am hosting.

NO-sew Burlap Rosette tutorial

If you missed last weeks flower make sure to check out Christaโ€™s felt flower tutorial  – easy to make and so cute!

Christa's white felt flower

Today I want to show you how to make a NO-SEW and very easy, gathered burlap rosette.  Although you can apply this same method with other types of materials as well.

I gathered up some burlap scraps I had laying around and some small pieces of colored burlap that I had picked up recently at Hobby Lobby.

You need a strip of burlap (and it needs to be cut straight with the grain/fibers of the burlap.)  You can choose how wide and how long you want it.  Mine was 2-3 inches wide and about 1.5 yards long.  The wider and longer your fabric, the thicker/bigger the flower will be.

On one end of your strip of burlap, do a row of hot glue and then fold it over making a sealed/finished edge.  (Ignore my completely un-manicured and paint covered hands โ€“ it wasnโ€™t time for my Saturday night manicure yet and I was in the middle of working on several projects! ๐Ÿ™‚

On the other end, find a fiber/string and pull it out.  (My string is in the middle, but I think if you find a string that is a little closer to one end (the shorter side will be the BACK of your rosette, it will work and look a little better.)   If you need to you can use a pair of scissors to cut one loose.

Since your other end is secured, you can pull that string and it will automatically gather the material for you.

You will end up with a strip of gathered burlap Smile

Bring both ends together to form a circle and secure with hot glue (or you could stitch it too, if you wanted.)

Your rosette will probably need a hair cut and may even require frequent hair cuts if it is handled a lot.

Optional: You can spread your flower out and find the middle and glue some kind of embellishment in the middle.  I LOVE these little rhinestone pieces you can get at Hobby Lobby.)

Here is a rosette I did out of green burlap.

And another green burlap rosette that is a little larger and frayed more on the edges.    As you can see, none of them turn out exactly the same due to the fraying, and the weave, etc of the burlap.

I attached one of the green burlap rosettes to my new spring DIY pillow cover on my bench on the front porch.  (Spring porch reveal post coming soon!)

There are so many possibilities for them though โ€“ hair bows, glue a pin on the back to wear yourself, napkin ring embellishments, vase embellishments, to adorn pillows and so much more!

What would you use it on?

Thanks, Christa!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I loved that green chevron at Hob Lob and had to plan everything else to go along with it. ๐Ÿ™‚ I already had the yellow fabric in my stash from my fabric by the pound sale. ๐Ÿ™‚

Your pillows are so pretty! I have made burlap rosettes before, too, although I did mine more like a rolled flower. And I love that yellow fabric…do you mind sharing where it’s from?

the yellow fabric is from my local fabric outlet store ๐Ÿ™‚ Maybe we can trade a visit to Mary Jo’s for a yard of it?? ๐Ÿ™‚ The green chevron and floral fabric are from Hobby Lobby.

Thanks for the inspiration! I made some burlap flowers similar to yours, but I changed it up just a little. I posted my project on my blog if you would like to see pictures.

I think I spiralled my burlap piece differently from yours, too, so it turned out poofier. I’m still trying to decide what to do with my flowers, and how to embellish them to add some color.

oh I love yours! It is like a layered look. I would add something fun in the middle – a button, pearl, covered button, sequin. Check the scrapbook aisle and bead/jewelry aisle at your craft store.

How would you suggest to attach a stem to the flowers, wanting to make them for wedding centerpieces for rustic wedding. Thank you for the great tutorial!
