No frugal finds to share with you this week. Hope to have some to share next week, if not I have some clearance finds I will share that I have found recently (and LOVE!)
I am way overdue for this post – my home goals for 2013. I even debated about not publishing it since you know, umm, one month of the year is already gone. BUT, putting it down on paper computer screen is a helpful motivator to me. And hopefully it will give you some insight into what type of things I hope to accomplish and share on the blog this year too.
My year has started out quite rocky, but hoping and praying that spring will bring much better things. Regardless, I am more determined than EVER to accomplish most if not all of these projects this year. These are specifically for our HOME. I have personal goals as well, you can see my personal goals for 2013 in this post.
When I was thinking of what I wanted to accomplish in our home this year, I came up with two major goals.
1. Make our house HOME to us and make it function in an organized manner.
We have many rooms in our house that are not functioning in an organized manner (office, craft/spare room) and other rooms that are so not us or feel “home” to us (hello, master bedroom!). I want to clean out, transform, redecorate, and finish these rooms so that we LOVE them, we love spending time in them, and they work for us as much as our living room, dining room, and eat-in-kitchen.
2. Make our home presentable to sell.
My husband and I have been talking recently about moving and putting our house up for sale. And that got me looking around – you know there are many things you just “live with” in your house. But if you were to try to sell they would need to be finished or fixed. Like a missing handrail on the stair, quarter round missing along the hallway and under the kitchen cabinets, paint on the walls that needs to be touched up, so many things… So accomplishing things like that and getting our house closer to ready to sell is the #2 goal this year. We may not be able to sell but if and when that time comes, I want to be ready! And plus, the things that need to be done will just make our house finished and presentable even if it is only us that enjoys them.
With these 2 goals in mind, here is my plan for this year.
Living room
Shared some things I want to change in this post. Change the brown wall, add some DIY art, find an armchair.
Kitchen
This is THE year the kitchen is getting DONE! I really want to put beadboard on the back of the bar (so many of you suggested this – thanks!), paint the cabinets, change out the cabinet handles, do something about the countertops, install new lighting, and possibly DIY a backsplash.
Office
Find a desk for this room so that it can be rearranged, organized, and functional for us to use.
Guest room
Make a DIY headboard, paint the existing furniture, redecorate (already in process). Possibly paint the room a different color.
Master bedroom
Make another DIY headboard, refinish/paint my $40 yard sale furniture, craigslist our current furniture, do some sort of wainscoting in there, paint, and decorate. I can’t tell you how much I LONG to have this room be a beautiful room for us. Going to try to have this done by our anniversary this summer.
Master bath
Paint, install some sort of molding or wainscoting?, frame in the mirror, decorate.
Laundry room
Install more storage to make this room more functional. Looking for some secondhand cabinets.
Spare room/craft room
Clean out and organize this room. Make it functional and usable.
Garage
Have a huge yard sale to clean out my huge yard sale pile I am purging from all over the house. Rearrange and organize and clean out the garage so this can be functional and usable for our families needs.
Along with those goals in those specific rooms to make our house HOME to us and more functional there are many things that need to be done to make it presentable and ready to sell if we choose to do that.
- install missing quarter round in kitchen and hallway
- re-install hand rail on stairs
- repaint pretty much the whole house (except for rooms that have already been done). Our house was painted almost 9 years ago and the paint has faded so we can’t just “touch up” anymore – and MANY touchups are needed.. So the main living areas – living room, downstairs hall, up the stairs, and upstairs hall all need to be painted. Would like to go with a more “greige” color than the gold tan that we have now. And I would work on this gradually room by room/hall.
- repaint all the baseboards and trim
- clean the carpets
- paint the front door
And I am sure that there are other things that I will think of but that is the list for now! I have been working on purging and organizing closets, cabinets, and rooms and should be done with that next week. Then once taxes are done, I plan to start tackling things on this list. Many of these things you will see throughout the year on the blog, so stay tuned!
What are your home goals for this year?

I am hooked on your blog/projects! I am in a new phase of life…empty nest; when I can more freely choose things for my home, BUT I I love, love, love, the challenge of doing things frugally. I have been making my own textured canvas wall art, about 3 dollars each. You mentioned you would like to do that for wall art, you may really like it. I have to figure out how to post pics!

Ooooohhhh…I LOVE your goals, Christina!!! And I love seeing pics of your house in with them. It helps me envision the changes. Yea for you! I think we should plan a get-together and I can come help you re-do your Master BR in time for your anniversary. 😀

Oh my gosh! That is an awesome and awe-inspiring list. I wish you the best in fulfilling your goals in 2013. I wish I had your energy, that’s for sure. Quite a bit to tackle. Now I should probably sit down and make my own list, but I seem to think that as long as I don’t “crystalize” things formally in writing, maybe they’ll all just sort of float away and I won’t have to constantly have them nagging me in the back of my mind saying “this needs to be done, that needs to be done…” Good luck. BTW, I think your kitchen looks great, but yeah, beadboard would be a great touch on the back of your bar area.
