P52: Things that grow

project 52 p52 weekly photo challenge my3boybarians.com

I am participating in a project over at My 3 Boybarians called Project52 (P52) which stands for “1 photo each week for a year.” There is an assigned theme each week and I try to take the best photo I can related to that theme.  You can see all my other weekly photos here.   Here is my picture for this week’s theme…

Things that grow… my favorite thing about spring!  The grass starting to grow, the growing leaves on the trees, and the flowers, oh the flowers! Smile

I love flowers… maybe that is why I enjoy working in the yard so much.

Let’s go back in time just shy of a month ago.  I showed you how I cleaned out and replanted flower garden – this picture was taken on 3/26/12.

About 10 days later, on Easter, I took this picture – 4/8/12.

Fast forward another 10 days and everything is in full bloom – pictures taken on 4/19/12.

I love roses and daisies!  My wedding flowers were red roses and daisies – hmmm… guess I still like them almost 10 years later.

Once again – just shy of a month ago.

And yesterday – what a difference a month makes.

By the way, there’s something else growing on my front porch.

We are the proud parents of lots of baby birds! ;0  For the last 5 years or so a family of House Finches make their home and raise a family in our ferns.  They actually fly around my porch as soon as the weather gets warm just waiting for me to put up my ferns so they can start building their nests.  We usually have just one family nesting, but this spring we have a family nesting in each fern (probably some of our previous baby birds all grown up and raising their own family – awwww!)  I checked the nests yesterday and the babies were just hatching.  Each nest had 4 eggs and as of yesterday there were 3 babies hatched in one nest (checked today and all 4 eggs have hatched now!)

And the second nest had 1 little bird that was still a little damp looking – just hours old from hatching.  (There are 3 hatched as of today.)

I might try to stake out the nests one day and get a picture of the parents but they are hard to get on camera.

Here’s what they look like though – love the daddy’s red coloring.

House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus)

And yes, they are songbirds.  So my mornings are filled with glorious chirping from the front porch – the cat and I both love it! Smile

Enjoying all the things growing this Spring – birds, flowers, trees, grass…

  1. Wow! Fun pictures of the baby birds!

Thanks, MaryEllen! Will have to try to remember to take some more pictures in a week or two when they get a little bigger and have feathers 🙂

  2. Oh my goodness- those baby birds!! So adorable.
We have a nest at the church actually that has one egg in it. It is in a very open and accessible space, so with all the kids peeking at it, I’m hoping the egg is able to grow into a baby bird! lol

  3. Awww, those baby birds are SO cute!! We actually had a little birdie funeral yesterday {sniff:sniff} We have a nest in the corner of our front porch and on Wednesday we found one of the babies fallen from the nest, like it had tried to fly. It was okay and we put it back in the nest. Although while we were holding it, it kept opening it’s mouth for food. It was pitiful! But then yesterday we found it fallen again and this time it was dead. =..( Glad your little birds are doing better than ours!

Nice daisy picture too, they are so pretty!

awww – so sad about the birdie furneral 🙁 we had a cat (not our cat – he is stricttly indoors!) get mine 2 years ago – he got up on the rail and leaped onto the fern and knocked the babies out and ate them 🙁 so I am keeping careful watch out for any predators and will help fight them off 🙂

  4. My kids would love having birds on our front porch. Too cute. I love daisies too.

  5. Your flowers are beautiful! And I think it would be lovely to have songbirds on my front porch.

I’ve got a bird of some sort that’s apparently got a nest in a bush outside my dining room window. It doesn’t sing however, and I can’t see the nest to peek in & see cute little birds. All I get is a crazy bird that keeps flying into the window – I’m thinking maybe it sees what it thinks is another bird in the window’s reflection and it’s trying to chase it away. At least that’s what it looks like from inside!

well, the link I looked up SAID they were songbirds but they don’t really sing songs 🙂 more like just constant chirping 🙂 But I really do enjoy hearing them especially when they are more active in the early mornings 🙂 and it keeps my cat entertained for hours at the window chattering at them 🙂
